Located on a tight urban site, formally an outdoor market with highways to 3 sides, the scheme had to be carefully considered and designed to take into account these constraints. The building was designed to integrate with the existing shopping centre, providing a wider range of facilities and improving the area.
The development is complete and trading.
To provide an additional 95,000sq.ft of retail floor space over two floors, along with a new market hall for Salford Shopping Centre. The project also includes the closure of a public highway, Pendleton Way, to facilitate an exciting new public realm scheme.
The main retail space is split into two buildings, allowing the existing shopping centre entrances to be maintained. The 13 new units are aranged over two storeys to allow the units to be serviced from the existing roof top service area. The scheme uses traditional materials such as stone, timber cladding and brickwork in a modern architectural style to create a new, fresh and vibrant shopping destination. The scheme also includes the construction of a modern new market hall and several small retail kiosks set in strategic locations throughout the new public realm space.
The project was granted planning consent in July 2012.
Construction of a new 86,000sq.ft superstore with 350 car parking spaces. To facilitate the town centre redevelopment, an existing Youth Centre and Health Centre will also be relocated along with a number of smaller retail units.
The final design provides a large stilted superstore at second floor with 450 car parking spaces arranged over two floors below. The main elevation faces north, with the existing shopping centre design consisting of large areas of glazing, facing brickwork and ashlar stone panels to create a light and modern facade. The use of glass creates an exciting active frontage facing the existing town centre, generating interest and allowing customers to orientate themselves.

The development comprises a covered mall, 42,000 square ft supermarket and a 350 space car park. The Bradford and Calderdale RRF will treat around 190,000 tonnes of household waste per annum. The smaller buildings house the Mechanical Recovery Plant and will use state-of-the-art magnetic separators, eddy current separators and infra-red devices to extract the waste that can be recycled. Then the larger 45m high Energy Recovery Plant will use thermal combustion technology to convert the remaining waste into electricity, enough to power 20,000 homes.
The proposed architectural solution is the culmination of a three year PFI procurement process and will deliver an exciting new landmark for Bradford. The use of strong vivid colours to the smaller buildings adds interest, whilst the use of diminishing and recessive blue colours to the taller ERP building helps mitigate its apparent mass. The entire facility will acheive CE-QUAL Excellent, while the dedicated Visitors Centre will acheive BREEAM Excellent.
The project received planning approval in October 2012.
